Wagga trainer Chris Heywood is hoping the promising Blitzar can overcome a wet track and a strong Highway field at Rosehill on Saturday.
Blitzar is a $4.40 favourite in the $75,000 class three handicap over 1200m on Golden Eagle day.
“I couldn’t be happier with him. Obviously wet track … he’s never raced on. He’s trialled on it (two weeks ago) and he handled it with ease. I think he’ll get through it okay but he’ll probably be a far better horse on top of the ground,” Heywood said.
“But I still expect him to race well.”
The four-year-old Deep Field gelding has had two trials at Wagga since an impressive win over 1100m on Dubbo Cup day in mid-September. He missed a Highway start when emergency a fortnight ago.
The lightly-raced Blitzar has had three wins but Heywood knows his 10th career start will be a challenge.
“There’s some pretty smart horses in it, there’s no two doubts about that,” he said.
“Put it this way, I think you’ll see a lot of form out of this race. There’ll be plenty of these horses go on and win more.”
With a bit of luck, Blitzar will be one of them.
“Yeah, he’s very smart. He’s above average,” Heywood said of the stable’s rising star.
Regan Bayliss has the ride on Blitzar.
Rosehill was rated a heavy eight at Friday lunchtime with showers expected overnight and into Saturday.
